Cineplex, which owns and operates 172 movie theatres and entertainment venues across Canada according to its 2024 annual report, registered a lobbyist in B.C. to seek “a more favourable film classification environment for film exhibitors.”
Consumer Protection BC decides the ratings for all movies exhibited in the province. The film’s distributors, through the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), also produce a rating for their films, but those ratings are voluntary and are not enforceable by law like provincial ones.
