Canada’s intelligence service sent an internal warning that the attempted assassination of U.S. President Donald Trump would “embolden” violent rhetoric against local politicians.

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) Integrated Threat Assessment Centre prepared that report in July 2024, just two days after a gunman fired on Trump during an open-air rally in Pennsylvania. CSIS assessed the attack on Trump, then the presumptive Republican nominee for that year’s election, was likely to "embolden violent rhetoric towards Canadian public officials," though they decided an "inspired attack" was unlikely.
