A federal report estimates it could cost between $500 and $750 million to clean abandoned and inactive oil wells located on First Nations reserves.
A briefing note prepared for the deputy minister of Indigenous Services Canada in October 2024 reveals that the federal department estimated there were roughly 2,770 orphaned or otherwise abandoned oil wells across reserves, the vast bulk of them in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
