The company behind Canada’s largest private university is proposing that provinces pay to educate Canadian doctors at its medical schools overseas to address the shortage of physicians across the country. Global University Systems (GUS) has asked four provinces to subsidize tuition for Canadians at the company’s private medical schools in the Caribbean.
GUS officials met directly with the health ministers of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island in May to propose the plan, according to records the IJF obtained under freedom of information legislation. Newfoundland and Labrador’s acting health minister also attended.
