The Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) registered this month to lobby the federal government about a section of U.S. President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill that could allow the United States to increase tax rates on any payments made by U.S. entities to residents of other countries if the governments of those countries have enacted “unfair foreign taxes,” against the U.S.
The bill deems the Digital Services Taxes Act, which Canada introduced last year, as unfair because the act imposes a three per cent tax on digital businesses that collected more than 750 million Euros in revenue globally and more than $20 million in Canada. The U.S. administration has criticized the design of the bill saying it discriminates against large American companies like Meta, Google and Netflix.
