Police are seizing a record number of firearms within Canada and at the border, according to data obtained by the Investigative Journalism Foundation. Experts differ on the extent to which these seizures have contributed to a reduction in gun violence.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confiscated 30,920 firearms in 2021, the highest number it’s seized since at least 2015. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) seized 1,203 firearms at the border last year, the highest count for any year on record and more than double what they took two years prior.
