Morien Natural Resources, a Dartmouth, N.S.-based natural resource holdings company, registered a lobbyist last week to discuss its interests in the province. It holds royalty interests in the Black Point quarry in Guysborough County and the Donkin coal mine in Cape Breton. A roof collapse caused the Donkin mine to temporarily close in July 2023. After repairs, the mine was cleared for work in March 2024, but production hasn’t resumed yet.

Morien’s lobbying registration follows a Jan. 21 letter written by Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston to his caucus in which he stressed that the province has to do more to protect its economy in light of threats introduced by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs and possible changes in federal policy.
